TOY DESIGNERS ARE CREATIVE MAVERICKS. THEY DESIGN PRODUCTS & TOYS FOR A FUNCTIONAL AND EMOTIVE EXPERIENCE.

Industrial Design Diploma aims to train individuals to become a full fledge toy or product designer by equipping students with the knowhow on processes and skills in the area of protoyping and design. From having a full understanding of the entire rapid prototyping process, to creating human friendly designs or even developing their own line of toy products. The course will have an emphasis on essential softwares, tools and functionalities as well as critical concepts governing industrial design and production. Students will graduate with important skillsets to be both independent creators of new and innovative products, as well as assume major designer roles in industrial design companies.

CURRICULUM

TERM 1

Students will begin training in key tools used in the process of product design as well as toy making. They will learn industry standards for rapid prototyping such as Fusion360 as well as 3d printing processes.

TERM 2

Students will commence their specializations: Toy production or Product Design. Toy designers will focus on resin molding and casting as well as iterating. Product designers, will go indepth into Fusion360 and create usable functional prototypes like headphones or mechanical products.

TERM 3

In this final term, students will continue their specialisation and focus on their development. At this stage, students will begin polishing and attemp final iterations of their project. They will also prepare to present and pitch their physical prototype in industry formats.

SCULPTING & ANATOMY

Students will learn the traditional way of sculpting using clay, with a heavy emphasis on anatomy. Still the preferred method amongst professional sculptors today, clay sculpting is able to translate finer details from mould to casts faithfully.

3D PRINTING & BASIC ENGINEERING

3D printing is increasingly being used in toys production as well as product design and rapid prototyping. Students will learn processes and techniques to design their ideas into physical assets, and also managing 3D files (e.g. ZBrush)  for 3D Printing. They will also learn to integrate basic engineering processes into these prototypes.

MOULDING & CASTING

Moulding and casting is a critical aspect of toy production and some aspect of product design. This skillset allows indie makers to make multiple copies of their genesis sculpt or asset. Once the sculpts are complete, students will learn the professional techniques to create clean silicone moulds for their perfect casts.

MATERIALS & PAINTING

The products are not finished without a coat of paint and materials. Students will learn differentiating aspects of materials and when to use them, as well as painting process for varied kind of assets.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

Applicants must be above 16 and completed 'O' Levels or equivalent, including English.
Applicants must also submit a portfolio and pass an interview.
