SPECIALIST CERTIFICATE IN DIGITAL SCULPTING (ZBRUSH)

The Specialist Certificate in Digital Sculpting (ZBrush) course is specially designed for those who aspire to be computer graphics (CG) or 3D modelers. The introduction of Zbrush by Pixologic has revolutionalised the way modeling is done in 3D space; not just in the ability to deliver higher quality models, but also in a relatively shorter time. In this programme, students are taught important modeling concepts on organic anatomy, topology, proportions and etc, and most certainly the tools and techniques of using ZBrush. Re-topology techniques are also taught to control the poly-count of models for animation in film or for gaming purposes. This includes texturing tools and exporting normal maps to production 3D packages like Maya or 3ds max. By the end of the programmes, students will understand the workflow of modeling a CG  character or object for animations or games.

CURRICULUM HIGHLIGHTS

Anatomy Studies
In this subject, students will understand the concept of body ratio proportion and muscle structure through studying of image references and drawings. The objective is to allow students to have a strong foundation and develop good eye judgment to create organic forms.

User Interface

Students will learn and understand the tools and functionalities in Zbrush, for example, tool, subtool, layers, geometry, preview, deformation, import and export, polygroups, masking, move, scale, rotate, zadd and zsub, brush sizes, zmapper, alpha, material and etc. This knowledge is essential before any digital sculpting can even begin!

Importing and Exporting Tool
Students will understand the techniques of importing a mesh from a 3D commercial software like Maya or 3D Studio Max to Zbrush and vice versa using exporting format like Obj. Having a coherent format enables other 3D commercial software to recognize and read the file while retaining information like UVW coordinates and mesh smooth surfaces.

Transformation Tool
This will enable students to move the 3D mesh, perform 3D scaling, 3D rotation in edit mode or work in frame mode so that students can visualize models in wire frame and activate X Y Z symmetry mode to help sculpting. The transformation tool also enables students to do sculpting on only one symmetrical half of the model rather than having to sculpt both sides, as the sculpted object is moved, zoomed and rotated in the viewport, facilitating the entire modeling and sculpting process.

Projection Master

These functions allow students to temporary project a 2D or 2.5D version of the model, the sculpted details and paint textures. Students will learn "standard" 3D tools used for sculpting low and medium resolution details on a model. They will also learn how to activate Projection Master to convert the visible portion of the model into pixels on the canvas.

Stroke Tool
Students will learn ways to enhance their brush and sculpting techniques by applying different strokes onto their model, for example, dots, freehand, colour spray, drag dot, spray etc, to achieve different visual effects. This is also where the lazy mouse tool is found - this gives the student more control over small details on the model’s surface.
